Yeah, I’m lucky – I’ve got another computer right here, and broadband out the wazoo. Somebody who upgrades their PC and finds out (because it doesn’t warn you, that’s for sure) that their network card suddenly doesn’t work is going to be so very, very thrilled.

But there sure are a lot of shiny brightly-colored elegant curves like the stuff I do on GIMP when I get bored!
(I did not mean to laugh at your pain, but I did. Sorry.)
As a dialup user for years after everyone else moved to broadband, and as having grown up in a country where connectivity was not nearly as widespread and automatic as it was for years after the US reached that point, I have never been entirely that trusting of update/repair schemes that require connectivity. Because, well, see above. When they work they work. When they don't and you are not given any other option, now your world is pain.
