Since the studs are 16" apart like clockwork in this building, I do a wall by running a circular saw straight up halfway between them then just levering the lathe off the slats by hand. They zipper right off, I shovel up the debris and done.

It sure helps that I know there's no plumbing or electrical in the walls i'm working on, though.

So if you're just sawing off the laths, don't they still have bits nailed to the front of the studs? Maybe I'm picturing this wrong...

Well, if we take the studs out of the wall my best guess is that the entire back third of my second floor ends up falling through my kitchen and onto my furnace. So, I think no. We're replacing the window too, though, so there's plenty of leeway for catastrophe to make a dramatic entrance nevertheless.

So are you taking out the studs, too? When we did this as a kid, we used crowbars to pry the damn laths off the studs, which was basically anti-fun.

(And then my parents made us PULL THE NAILS OUT AND STACK THEM UP FOR KINDLING for the woodstove to heat our house. God.)
