Small Doses

Spherical Mirrors

If like most of my ostensible friends you can only tolerate me in small doses, I’m using twitter to decant the occasional psychosis from the somewhat less well-managed corners of my brain. If you would like those things decanted right back into your own, there they are.

In this photo there are twenty-nine unambiguously identifiable people who are not in subway cars, thirteen who are arguably identifiable inside subway cars, and one immediately identifiable cameraman.

In this photo there are eight purses, six shopping bags, three backpacks, one ill-concealed shoulder holster rig worn by the large chap descending the stairs, one newspaper folded and slung in the traditional under-elbow fashion, and one satchel obviously stuffed with electronic and optical gear.

In this photo there are 12,000,000 pixels, each containing up to 16,777,216 bits of colour information (though that has been artificially limited by the discrete cosine transform through which the 8×8 blocks of pixels have all been passed).

In this photo there are EXIF tags identifying the camera make and model, the conversion software name and revision used, and the exact timestamp of the photo (from which we can infer that this was taken on the commute home, information which otherwise can’t be gleaned from the lighting in the shot).

“Ah”, the cunning reader may ask, “but how many floor tiles are there?”
